Finding current and factual information online
Have you ever used a periodical database? Do you know what one is? A periodical database is a listing of articles from a range of periodicals (magazines, newspapers, annuals etc.)
One benefit of the database is that it makes it possible to search for information using keywords and these keywords are searched for in the title, the subject and even in the body of articles. At St George College Library we subscribe to a number of periodical databases on your behalf (as students and teachers of the College) to make accessing information in your subject area easy. Some of these databases can only be accessed from within the library. Others, staff can access from their offices and others can be accessed from home! All of them are free for you to use as a staff member or current student of St George College.
Many of the articles are available in full text to make it quick and easy for you to complete your work. Most of these databases are kept very current and often you can find articles that have only appeared in a periodical that day or week. Another real benefit over a regular Internet search engine search is that the information is from a reliable, trustworthy, and traceable source, so you don't have to worry when you include it in your assignment that it might be dodgy.
Why not try out some of our databases now:
ANZRC (Australian New Zealand Resource Center) - remote access. You only need your TAFEcard library barcode to gain access.
InfoTrac - remote access. Contact the library on 9598-6311 for passwords (you will need to verify you are a staff member or student with your TAFEcard).
Proquest - remote access. Contact the library on 9598-6311 for passwords (you will need to verify you are a staff member or student with your TAFEcard).
The following databases are available in the library only:
Factiva
MacquarieNet
Standards Australia
Building Code of Australia
Independent Social Security Handbook
Social SecurityReporter
Online Currents
