What is E-Reserve?
eReserve enables students to access reading materials electronically.
Unlike books and other materials which are held physically in the Libraries Special Reserve, e-Reserve materials can be accessed by students using their home computers.
eReserve may contain the following : web sites; journal articles ; scanned book chapters, downloaded files; images and photographs.
Each eReserve items is filed under the teachers name and can only be accessed by a student using a password provided by the teacher. Library staff upload the material into the
eReserve module and maintain the entry for as long as the teacher requires.

The Librarians
A new weekly comedy series, The Librarians, has been running on ABC TV @ 9.30 pm on Wednesdays. The final episode screens on 28 November.
The series is set in a suburban public library and while I doubt you would consider St George College library to be a similarly wacky place, I could be wrong. Actually, I would be interested to know what you think of the show. Are the scripts realistic or ridiculous? Are they amusing? Which characters do you like or dislike? Do any of them remind you of librarians you have encountered?
Please feel free to express your opinion.

New Books
Hi everyone,
There are some new books which you might find interesting.
One is called "Don't bother me, mom, I'm learning! : how computer and video games are preparing your kids for 21st century success and how you can help."
"This is a positive guide for parents concerned about their kids' video and computer game playing. Marc Prensky, who offers the other side of the story in this enlightening and comprehensive guide to the benefits of video games."
Another one is called "The revenge of Gaia : why the earth is fighting back -and how we can still save humanity"
"For thousands of years, humans have exploited the planet without counting the cost. Now Gaia, the living Earth, is fighting back. This is the one book you must read to find out what is happening, how bad it will get - and how we might yet survive."

My Library Practice II at St. George College Library
Hi! My name is Cecilia.
I live in Arncliffe which is not far from Kogarah and I'm at this Library completing a Library Technician Diploma which I started part-time at Ultimo TAFE quite a while ago.
Everyone here is so friendly and I commend all Staff for the great work they do. For this reason time has flown and sadly there are only three days remaining of my placement (of a total of 4 weeks). The good news is that Julie from Ultimo TAFE was here last Friday and said I passed this Practice. That made me very happy and I celebrated over the weekend by visiting my friends and going to art galleries and to the 'Walk against Warm' march.
There is still some work to be completed if I want to finish this Course, so I should stop celebrating and going out for a bit. This is hard to do, I love my friends and take any excuse to celebrate and go out!

Resource development kits to create eLearning resources
St George College library has been proud to take delivery of a resource development kit designed for teaching staff use to allow them to create eLearning resources for use with their classes. The kit contains an ACER notebook computer with a range of accessories (external hard drive, speakers, webcam, USB headset with microphone and more) as well as a host of software, additional to a Sydney Institute computer standard build, that will allow teachers to modify, manipulate and enhance objects that they create.
As well there is a whole box full of fun equipment that teachers can go wild with in creating interactive objects and also including students in the creation of learning objects and resources. An iPod with a Belkin recorder makes creating audio files (or a regualr podcast a piece of cake), there are also lapel or interview microphones for higher quality audio recording. On top of this there is a 7.1 mega pixel digital camera for taking still images or video and the cables that you need to download the images to the computer, or broadcast onto a TV.
As if that is not enough you can also hook up a whole classroom using some conference style microphones through an audio mixer to ensure that class discussions are recorded for future reference. The whole lot is packaged up in a hard case (with two layers for the equipment) on wheels and an extention handle that the notebook can also be attached to.

Library staff are looking forward to hearing lots of success stories from teachers about how they used the equipment (how easy it was to use) and about how much the eLearning resources enhanced their students learning experience.
Sydney Institute staff can find out more from the myLearning wiki (accessible from SydNet).
